A Parent's Guide to Starting Coding

How to choose an age-appropriate first experience that turns screen time into active, creative problem-solving.

Learning to code is not mainly about memorising commands. For a child, it is a way to practise breaking a big idea into smaller steps, testing what happens and improving the result. The best starting point is therefore not the most advanced language. It is the environment that helps your child make something they care about.

What is a good age to begin?

Children can begin exploring coding concepts in primary school, but readiness matters more than a single age. A learner who enjoys puzzles, stories, drawing or building may already have a natural entry point.

For younger learners, visual coding makes cause and effect easy to see. As confidence grows, text-based programming such as Python can introduce more precise ways to organise ideas.

  • Grades 3-5: stories, animations, games and visual logic
  • Grades 6-8: Python foundations, applications and simple AI experiments
  • Grades 9-12: deeper Python, data, AI and portfolio projects

What should the first few classes feel like?

A strong first class gives the learner an achievable goal and enough room to make choices. The mentor may demonstrate a concept, but the child should quickly use it, ask questions and see the result of their own decisions.

Expect some productive struggle. Debugging is part of the learning: the important question is whether the child receives guidance that helps them think, rather than an answer to copy.

How is coding different from ordinary screen time?

The useful distinction is consumption versus creation. Watching a tutorial from beginning to end is still passive if the learner never changes, tests or explains the project. Creative screen time produces evidence: a game, story, tool or experiment that the child can walk you through.

  • Ask: What did you decide while building this?
  • Ask: What went wrong, and how did you fix it?
  • Ask: What would you add if you had another hour?
